Elon Musk hat seine Vision eines “komplett neuen Transportsystems” vorgestellt. Die Ende 2016 von ihm gegründete “The Boring Company” hat dazu unter der kalifornischen Stadt Hawthorne einen 1,8 Kilometer langen Mini-Tunnel gebaut. Musk will auf diesem Weg mehr Verkehr in Großstädten unter die Erde verlegen. Autos sollen dort mit hoher Geschwindigkeit durch neben- und übereinander gegrabene Tunnel schießen.
Statt der angekündigten, eigens entwickelten Elektrofahrzeuge stand bei der ersten öffentlichen Präsentation diesen Mittwoch das Tesla Model X im Mittelpunkt. Der über die vergangenen Monate ausgehobene und ausgebaute Tunnel in Hawthorne ist nicht viel breiter als ein Pkw. An die Vorderräder einfahrender Fahrzeuge wird eine Konstruktion angebaut, die an Stützräder erinnert. Die Autos werden über Schienen an den Wänden in der Spur gehalten und fahren mit eigenem Antrieb durch die Röhre.
Ursprünglich war vorgesehen, Fahrzeuge auf großen “Skateboards” mit hoher Geschwindigkeit durch die Tunnel zu transportieren. Da sich das als zu kompliziert herausgestellt hat, kommt nun ein Stützräder-System zum Einsatz.

Musk stellt in Aussicht, dass in den Tunneln der Boring Company Geschwindigkeiten von über 240 Kilometern pro Stunde erreicht werden. Seine Vision beschränkt sich nicht nur auf den Transport von Teslas, andere Fabrikate erfüllen die Vorgaben für das System derzeit jedoch nicht. Neben Anforderungen an die Höchstgeschwindigkeit und die Fähigkeit zum Autonomen Fahren ist ein rein elektrischer Antrieb Pflicht – ein aufwändiges Lüftungssystem für das Ableiten von Abgasen ist nicht geplant.
Zusätzlich zu Autos sollen in den Tunnel auch Radfahrer und Fußgänger schneller pendeln können, erklärte Musk auf Twitter. Zu diesem Zweck dürften die in diesem Jahr vorgestellten, derzeit nur als Entwurf existierenden Elektro-Shuttles dienen.
Die Kosten für den Testtunnel bezifferte Musk auf rund zehn Millionen Dollar, insgesamt habe er bereits 40 Millionen in die Boring Company investiert. Die von ihm erdachte Transportlösung befindet sich derzeit noch in der Konzeptphase, für den angepeilten finalen Umfang der Tunnelrouten sind weitere Investitionen und die Unterstützung von Städten nötig – das Interesse letzter soll in den USA bereits groß sein.
